Review: MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator

Have you ever travelled to Hawaii, taken a tour of a volcano and tried to take a piece of lava rock home with you to remember your trip only to find out that it’s considered “bad luck” by local Hawaiians? No? Yeah me neither.

Ok, well i’ll be honest with you. The summer before my sophomore year of college, I was blessed with the opportunity to vacation in Hawaii via cruise hopping to various islands followed by two extra days in Honolulu. This trip was the closest I have ever been to a volcano or touched lava rock. I also remember before getting back on the ship local officials confiscating our “souvenirs,” aka the pieces of rock we tried to sneak in.

However, I’m not mad, because apparently MAC got away with some of this amazing lava rock because the Volcanic Ash Exfoliator is the truth. It’s hands down one of the best exfoliators I’ve ever used. Why? Let’s break it down:

A highly effective, dual-purpose foaming, cleansing and exfoliating scrub blending natural Volcanic Ash with fine sugar crystals. Refines and unclogs the skin, adds instant moisture: leaves skin feeling soft and comfortably clean. Mineral-rich. May be used effectively on any part of face or body. Rinses off with warm water.

• Exfoliant: While there are noticeable granules in the product as evident in the photo above, once you rub it on your skin it is not harsh at all. I use it after cleansing my face so my skin is still pretty damp. Upon rinsing my face with water there are no deposits on my face. Some exfoliators have so much exfoliant that it takes multiple rinses for you not to feel the leftover granules The. main exfoliants are Sucrose (more widely known as table sugar) and Silica (also widely known as a component of sand).

• The scent: This product is very fragrant, similar to other MAC skin care products. If you use MAC fix+ or any of their moisturizers/primers, you know what scent I’m talking about. While it is fragrant, as soon as you wash it off the heavy fragrance disappears and your left with a clean scent.

•  Results: I notice that directly after I use this, my skin is radiant and smoother. If you are an instant gratification beauty enthusiast, this product is for you. It’s great for special occasions, because your cleansed smooth skin will be a better base for the make up that you’re going to put on after. I have used this product every other day for the past two weeks.
